Invisalign Q & A

What is Invisalign®?

Invisalign® is a tooth-straightening orthodontic system that provides a popular alternative to traditional metal braces. While traditional braces use brackets and wires to move teeth into their proper positions over time, the Invisalign® system uses a series of smooth, clear plastic aligners that are custom-made to fit each patient’s mouth. When worn in the proper sequence, these aligners move the teeth into alignment without the discomfort or stigma associated with traditional braces.

What are the benefits of Invisalign® compared to other types of orthodontics?

Invisalign® aligners are completely smooth, so there are no sharp edges or wires to irritate and cut the cheeks and lips. They’re also clear, which means they’re almost invisible while they’re being worn. Plus, they can be removed when eating and when brushing and flossing teeth, which means there are no dietary restrictions and teeth can be cared for “like usual,” without the need for special tools required to clean around wires and brackets. And because they’re custom-fit for each patient, treatment can usually be completed much faster than with traditional braces, typically in 18 months or less.

What happens during Invisalign® treatment?

Invisalign® treatment begins with impressions of the teeth. These impressions or molds are sent to the lab where the aligners are made. The impressions are scanned into a computer that uses special proprietary software to create a series of three-dimensional models that show how the teeth need to move to come into alignment. Then, those models are used to create the actual aligners. During treatment, each aligner is worn for two to three weeks, then swapped for the next aligner in the series to keep teeth moving in their proper directions. Patients visit the office about once every six weeks to ensure their treatment is progressing as planned.

Does dental insurance cover the cost of Invisalign® treatment?

Coverage varies from one dental plan to another. Our office staff reviews each patient’s dental insurance plan to determine the extent of any available benefits, and they can also identify financing plans that can make treatment more affordable for just about any budget.
