Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Dental veneers are very thin laminates that are placed on the front surfaces of teeth to correct cosmetic defects and extensive tooth decay which improves the appearance of the teeth and the smile. Today’s veneers are made of a very durable material (lithium disilicate) that mimics the translucent character of natural teeth, and they may be stained to blend beautifully with their neighboring teeth.

When are veneers used?

Dental veneers are used to address or correct the appearance of an array of cosmetic defects, including:

  • gaps between teeth
  • teeth with worn or uneven edges
  • deeply stained or discolored teeth
  • teeth that appear crooked or rotated
  • cracked or chipped teeth
  • teeth that appear too small, including “gummy” smiles
  • Extensive decay on the front of the teeth

How are Dental Veneers Made?

Veneers are handcrafted from lithium and custom fabricated for each patient’s tooth. Typically, they require two visits. At the first appointment, a small amount (0.5 - 1 mm) of surface tooth enamel is removed from the tooth to “make room” for the veneer so it rests at the same level as the neighboring teeth and doesn’t protrude above or beyond the edges of those teeth. Then an impression is taken along with a bite record along with a chosen color for the veneer. It is then sent to the lab where the veneer will be fabricated. A temporary veneer may be placed on the tooth to protect it while the permanent veneer is being made. At the next appointment, the tooth surface will be carefully cleaned and the veneer will be applied and adhered using a strong dental adhesive, then shaped for a comfortable fit and natural appearance.

How long will a dental veneer last?

Dental veneers can last for a decade or more with proper care, which includes regular brushing and flossing and routine dental visits for cleanings and to ensure the veneer remains properly adhered. Never use teeth as tools to pry lids or other objects or to rip open packages. Although veneers are made of stain-resistant materials, their appearance can be maintained by rinsing after consuming coffee, red wine or other foods that can stain.

Are veneers covered by insurance?

Veneers are usually considered a cosmetic treatment and are therefore not covered by most dental insurance plans. Our staff can review your insurance coverage and help identify financing plans to make the cost of veneers more budget-friendly.
